The Phrase Work from Home on a Laptop

Working from home can seem like the dream, with no long commutes, flexible hours, and the freedom to set up your workspace just how you like it. Yet, many remote workers end up feeling drained, frustrated, and wondering, “Where did my day go?“. Wonder no more with these simple and quick-to-start productivity hacks for remote workers you are about to read.

A study by Buffer reveals some everyday struggles faced by remote workers:

  • 22% struggle to unplug after work
  • 18% feel isolated due to lack of social interactions
  • 17% find home distractions challenging

You’re not alone if you struggle with distractions or feel unproductive. This blog post outlines practical strategies and productivity hacks for remote workers to help you achieve better results.

1. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace

One of the fastest ways to derail your productivity is by trying to work from your bed or couch. Imagine this, “You wake up, whether it’s early in the morning or late in the day, and instead of getting ready at a designated workspace, you pull out your laptop and log in from the comfort of your blankets or cushions.” Initially, it may seem like a cosy idea, but soon enough, you’ll find yourself feeling mentally sluggish and unmotivated.

Creating a focused environment is one of the top productivity hacks for remote workers. By designating a separate space for work, you signal to your brain that it’s time to get things done.

What to do:

  • Pick a Quiet Spot: Find a corner in your home with few distractions. This could be a nook by a window or a quiet area in your living room that feels different from where you relax.
  • Make It Yours: Set up a desk and a comfortable chair. Include all the tools you need. You don’t have to buy expensive furniture; just make sure it’s comfortable and has access to natural light. This can keep your energy levels up and help you stay focused throughout the day.
  • Keep It Clean: Regularly declutter your workspace. A tidy area helps you focus and feel good about your work. When you sit down to work, it should feel like it’s time to start.

2. Create a Morning Routine

Rolling out of bed and straight into work might sound efficient, but it often leads to sluggish, unfocused mornings. A simple routine can energise your mind and signal that it’s time to tackle the day.

I’ve seen firsthand how powerful this can be. For example, my cousin, who works remotely for a marketing agency, starts every morning by waking up at 6 am, gets to do a prayer walk for about an hour, rushes back home, showers immediately, and starts the day. She swears this ritual helps her focus and sets the tone for a productive day. I wrote a blog post on this morning routine: What Experts Say about “Your Morning Routine.” You should check it out.

  • Consistent Wake-Up Time: Train your body to wake up at the same time daily, even on weekends.
  • Showering and Dressing Up: While staying in your pyjamas may be comfortable, showering and getting dressed (even casually) signals to your brain that it’s time to work. This small change can significantly enhance your focus.
  • Start with Energising Activities: Whether it’s a quick workout, prayer, or a calm coffee session, do something that preps your brain for the day.

3. Manage Your Time Effectively
