There’s a moment in every freelancer’s or small business owner’s life when the work becomes more than just a hustle; it becomes a business. And at that point, you’re not just a service provider anymore… you’re the CEO, and you have to begin to learn how to think like a CEO.
But this is the problem: no one hands you a guidebook on what that really means.
You’re still writing copy, designing graphics, sending emails, posting on social media, replying clients, fixing tech issues… and trying to think big in between.
The truth is, whether you’re running a team of 10 or you’re a one-person army, you need to start thinking like a CEO. You might ask, why? Because the success of your business depends more on your mindset than your marketing.
1. Protect the Vision:
If you know how to think like a CEO, then you must know that every CEO’s job is to protect the vision, because that’s a reason your business exists in the first place. This doesn’t mean you need a five-page mission statement. It means you have a clear answer to this question: Where are we going, and why?
When you’re a solopreneur, it’s easy to get lost in the day-to-day, writing proposals, chasing invoices, and doing admin. But if you don’t regularly step back to revisit your vision, you’ll find yourself burnt out, busy… and directionless.
For instance, Marie Forleo, the bestselling author of Everything is Figureoutable, started as a solo entrepreneur and became a global leader. Listed on Forbes, also credited her long-term success to constantly reviewing and evolving her big-picture vision. Her brand, courses, books, and content all align with one theme: helping people create a life and business they love.
Block out 1–2 hours monthly to review your goals. And ask:
- What am I building?
- Are my daily tasks leading there?
- What needs to stop or shift?
