Seven Key strategies for staff productivity

Introduction to Staff Productivity

Productivity is the state of being efficient in the use of resources, that is, The judicious use of available resources to actualize a given task. Resources in any organization go beyond cash because time and talent are also significant parts of the company’s resources. Staff productivity is very key to the success of any organization or business.

For any company to thrive, it must understand that talents, that is, staff and workers, must be managed with so much attention to get the best of the company because they are the ones behind the wheel of the company steering in the direction of success.

The big question on staff productivity

The big question for most emerging businesses is, ‘Can we manage and motivate our staff properly without having to drag the company down financially?’, especially when the company budget cannot accommodate extra expenses. The big answer is a YES!

Seven key strategies to increase staff productivity

This blog post will look at seven key strategies to increase staff productivity without directly spending any money. This will affect the company’s productivity and the staff’s willingness and happiness as they go about their daily tasks.

Improvement of staff performance
  1. Create a work environment that harnesses the staff’s potential.

The rising hybrid culture of working that has become the order of working for businesses after the lockdown has proven to be a massive success in the productivity of staff. The work-life balance that this culture produces has demonstrated that employees will deliver better if they feel fulfilled because they are not left behind in other areas of their lives.

This culture can also be brought to work, ensuring that the workplace maintains the decorum of a workplace but also communicates the feel of an environment the employees want to be in. The workplace should combine the individual work desk with the feeling of a collaborative work table. This will ensure that the people are mentally and emotionally connected to their work, finding happiness in doing it and not doing it as an obligation.

  1. Appreciate staff before correcting them.

Except in a situation where the staff is entirely irresponsible, most staff want to do better at their work and will not deliberately abandon a task ahead of them.

Motivation has proven to be a great way to get people to move in the direction of productivity rather than complaining and nagging. The manager makes a habit of commending the little contributions and efforts made by the staff to motivate them to do more. In the case where there is an obvious mistake, ensure that your method of correction is purely professional and not personal, after which the whole team should be motivated to be more productive. Never forget that the key to productivity is motivating the staff and not downplaying their effort.

  1. Trust them rather than Micromanage.

Micromanagement is not a healthy culture for staff efficiency because all it communicates is that you do not think they can get the job done well enough. Supervision and accountability are excellent for the staff, but they must not communicate to them that they are not responsible enough to get the job done. They must see that the job is their responsibility and that their ingenuity is very well needed on the job. Micromanaging, that is, checking on the staff now and then after you have asked them to get a job done, is not a great way to motivate the staff- it is a more unlikely way to increase the staff productivity.

  1. Set realistic deadlines.

For one or more important reasons, the business might need to speed up a production or delivery process. However, this must not become the culture of the business. The moment this becomes a culture in the company, then the staff will begin to get a notion that the task is more important than their wellbeing- which can ultimately impact the productivity of the workers.

Staff productivity as a leader

As a manager or business owner, you must ensure that the working schedule allows the workers to be at optimum efficiency but also permits them to have quality breaks during the working process.

  1. Bring plants into the staff room.

Plants communicate both to the body and minds of people. Added to the ventilation that the presence of plants adds to the environment, it also communicates that the environment is lively and not dead dull. Although this might have to be bought at a nearby plant store, considering that most businesses usually have plants around the environment already, there might be no need not to purchase that.

  1. Be Transparent with the Staff

Secrecy is not a good business culture. There might be trade secrets that are specifically reserved for the directorate and management- however, staff must not feel like the company is intentionally trying to keep the details of a project from them.

As a manager, you must ensure that you spell out what is at stake to the staff and make it clear to them what the consequences of not delivering on time would be to the greater vision of the company. This will sell a sense of partnership and trust in their collaborative spirit.

  1. Reward staff, especially when they truly deserve to be

Even though we are looking at ways to increase staff productivity without a budget, the truth is that the company must also be prepared to fix rewards in its expense list, if not for all, then for exceptional staff. These rewards do not have to be huge; instead, they could be as simple as buying a birthday cake to celebrate staff, coupons for shopping in a mall or paying for training to better the staff’s qualifications. This is one outstanding way to increase the productivity of the staff.

Conclusion

The business’s well-being is directly tied to the well-being of the staff and workers in the company. Hence, the management must see investing in the staff as investing in the general well-being of the company. The seven steps listed above are cost-free or, at most, affordable ways to tell your staff that you care for them as they attend to the daily assignments of the business and that the company will also go a long way to ensure that they are well taken care of.
