In this blog post, I want to share my experience with the comfort zone and how I learned to embrace Discomfort to achieve personal and career growth. I recently read “The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations Into Breakthroughs” by Marcia Reynolds, which made me realise how much I had been limiting myself by staying in my comfort zone. This realisation has motivated me to take action and push myself out of my comfort zone. So this blog will explain my easy hacks for business success during discomfort seasons
I first wrote the first part of this blog, Why Entrepreneurs Must Embrace The Discomfort Zone For Breakthrough Success. This article delves into compelling examples of successful individuals and businesses that have reaped the benefits of leaving their comfort zones. They faced and overcame challenging situations without getting discouraged, and are now globally renowned and celebrated for their tangible efforts. It’s definitely worth a read after this blog post.
I created this quote to inspire myself and others:
The comfort zone is a trap that limits your potential and makes you settle for mediocrity.
Tomidbrand
The Comfort Zone is “a space where we feel content with our current results and make excuses to avoid trying new things, experiencing new challenges, and achieving greater success.“
This post provides practical tips and guides to help you embrace Discomfort, overcome challenges, and achieve your full potential.
1) Review in accordance with your business goals:
When you face challenging situations in your business, you need to act assertively and validate the situation in relation to your business goals. You must ask yourself whether the situation will help your business expand, help you develop a thicker skin, or hinder your efforts.
This review process will help you seek the necessary help to use the situation for your business’s good and help you ensure you dont just have written business goals and objectives but question whether they are attainable.
For instance, a customer visits your restaurant, orders a meal, and then uploads a complaint about the food and customer service. The post goes viral, which is an unpleasant situation. In such a case, you must review the situation, provide immediate damage control by apologising directly to the customer, and then fix the problem, either by organising a customer service class for your staff or cooking classes for your chefs to improve the quality of your food.
2) Find Fun in the Discomfort:
Over the course of three years, I have been a devoted viewer of Ali Abdal’s YouTube channel. Through his content, I have learned that life and business are not always straightforward, but the challenges and difficulties we face are opportunities for growth and learning. However, if we can find enjoyment even in uncomfortable situations, we can gain the motivation and courage to keep going.
For example, if you need assistance or guidance from someone but struggle with communication, don’t let it hold you back. Instead, view it as an opportunity to improve your communication skills. You could read an engaging book on communication and apply what you learn while documenting your progress. By doing so, you’ll be able to approach the situation with an exciting outlook and be more motivated to keep going.
3) Review Things and Prioritise Better:
Have you ever felt uncomfortable, overwhelmed, or confused about what to do next?
Sometimes, it can be tough to identify the tasks or efforts necessary to address the root cause of our discomfort. But don’t worry. As T. Harv Eker once said, “Whenever you feel uncomfortable, instead of retreating back into your old comfort zone, pat yourself on the back and say, ‘I must be growing,’ and continue moving forward.“
So when you pass through tough times, like trying to start a business and overwhelming yourself with what the outcome might look like, or when the business plans you made aren’t getting the desired results. During such times, you need to take a deep breath, acknowledge your discomfort, and use it as an opportunity for personal growth. Because in those discomforts, you will have opportunities that are disguising, and you can then prioritise what truly matters.
4) A Time to Face Your Fears
In business, confronting your fears is like taking a plunge into a swimming pool for the first time. It’s essential to face your fears head-on and let them know that you’re going to overcome them, because fear doesn’t help you achieve anything, it only stifles your creativity and innovation.
5) Don’t overthink
Overthinking can be a significant barrier to stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new opportunities. It’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of doubt, second-guessing every decision, and fearing the unknown. This mental paralysis can prevent you from taking the necessary risks to grow your business and achieve your goals.
Instead,
- Focus on maintaining a positive mindset and taking actionable steps forward. Understand that not every decision will be perfect, but progress often comes from learning from mistakes and adapting along the way.
- Try setting time limits for decision-making to avoid overanalysing.
- Embrace a mindset that values action and experimentation over perfection. By doing so, you’ll create momentum and foster a culture of innovation and resilience within your business.
6. Celebrate Little Wins:
When you’re working hard on your small business, it’s important to not just focus on the big picture, but to celebrate the little victories along the way! Taking the time to recognise these small achievements is super important for keeping up your motivation and keeping everyone in high spirits. Don’t forget to give yourself a pat on the back for hitting those milestones. Whether it’s finishing a project, landing a new client, or meeting a small revenue target, take a moment to celebrate.
Treat yourself to something special, take a little break to do something fun, or share your success with your team to boost everyone’s mood. By celebrating these small wins, you can break up the routine and keep yourself feeling excited and motivated. It’s all about creating a positive cycle that reminds you that every little bit of effort counts and is moving you closer to your big goals.
7) Prioritise your Health:
Take care of your mental and physical health while working through discomfort.
- Engage in activities that make you feel good, such as gratitude journals, yoga, walks, dancing lessons, or watching YouTube videos.
- Keep track of your physical health by checking your vital signs frequently, recognising when you’ve overworked yourself, and seeing a health practitioner regularly.
- Many other activities can help improve your overall well-being, such as painting and sipping, visiting friends or family, going to a spa, having a skincare routine, reading books, enjoying social media, watching comedy, or browsing YouTube. You can refer to the detailed resource below for more ideas.

8) Keep Track of your Discomfort Journey:
Document your journey and keep track of your progress. Please take pictures and videos and share them on social media or other platforms like a podcast, YouTube, or Medium account. You can learn from your experiences and inspire others to learn and grow from your journey, too.
9) Don’t Give UP:
Every obstacle is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t let discomfort or failure make you give up on your goals. As Thomas Edison famously said, “I have not failed; I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Stay positive and focused on your goals.
10) Ask for Help
Don’t isolate yourself while dealing with discomfort. Reach out to people who can provide help, motivation, insight, or solutions to your problems. Sharing your struggles with others can help you stay motivated, and they can offer valuable support and guidance.
11) Learn quickly from your mistakes
You need to understand that with business, failure is inevitable. I used to help my mom with her poultry business, and some seasons are favourable for different species; for instance, broilers don’t like high degree heat, while Turkey doesn’t like too much cold, so raising the chicks in the cold season we have to use different methods compared to when it’s cold season. And if we don’t learn fast from a chick dying, it moves to five, and then a huge mortality rate will be recorded. I learned that you must be ready to learn faster from your mistakes, or else the loss gets terrible.
In conclusion, don’t feel overwhelmed by anything; rather, take baby steps, make little wins, learn from your mistakes till you tick every milestone off your list, and become the great personality we celebrate in the world for taking risks and becoming a news shaker in our world.
I hope this has inspired you to step out of your comfort zone and take control of your life. What keeps you going when you face uncomfortable situations? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, so we can learn from each other.
