In simple terms, the market is a place where buying and selling occur. Sellers and buyers of various products are present. Just as one would visit the market to purchase groceries or another type of product, the stock and cryptocurrency markets are no different. The market can either come across as bullish or bearish, and this blog post will dive into a few aspects of evaluating market conditions.

Bull and Bear Market

What is a Bull and Bear Market?

A bull market is characterised by one thing: rising prices and, in many cases, doing so quickly. Investors’ optimism is on the rise, and they expect things to get juicier as time goes by. A typical example is the price of BTC around December 2022, which was about $17,000. However, since that time, BTC has risen to an all-time high of about 106,000 in December 2024, about two years later: a close to 6-fold increase in price. Anyone who bought BTC around that time would consider the market to be very bullish and, as a matter of fact, would be significantly in profit if they had held on until that point. A bear market, on the other hand, is characterised mainly by dropping stock and commodity prices. This results in fears and panic among investors who are seeking to either salvage the losses from their positions or de-risk their portfolio and take out as much as they can before it all gets bad. The fear in the market results in sellers increasing rapidly, and then it causes the price to drop in a spiral manner. Except there is much anticipation in the market, this can spiral down into a really bad situation where traders lose optimism and then don’t think the market can take shape in that season and may be anticipating the next cycle, often referred to as  the “bull run.”

A closer look at the market

Using BTC as a case study and this chart from coinmarketcap.com, a closer look at the market shows something remarkable over the long term. The market has been significantly bullish, and the idea that there was ever a bearish market would not seem to pass from a long-term perspective. A bearish or bullish market is not necessarily defined by the condition of the market but by the perspective of the trader.

5 Golden Rules of Cryptocurrency: How to Stay Safe in Any Market

A closer look at the chart above reveals that, like the market, those who purchased BTC in 2020 remained profitable despite the drastic bearish conditions of 2022/2023. Those who bought in 2021 and early to mid-2022 would have faced significant losses had they sold their holdings or traded on leverage. However, if they decided to hold their assets through the dip in 2023 and waited until 2024, they would have recovered their profits and made substantial gains to cover their losses.

Having paid attention to this, I will begin sharing trading tips that will help you flourish in every season. I have had the opportunity to learn practically from someone I would consider a whale, and in His words, “Crypto is a place for those who are retarded” I will explain the significance of holding and conviction to success in cryptocurrency.

DCA: A term that many don’t understand

DCA, short for dollar cost averaging, is an investment strategy that involves buying and investing a specific amount of money in the market and acquiring assets as the market conditions change. This strategy involves buying at different price ranges, allowing you to acquire more on average than you would have if you had bought at once.

This is one of the most important strategies that separates newbie investors because the market is always swinging positions as buyers and sellers create demand and supply elasticity. The price impact can create short-term bearish sentiments, and this is usually a time to average your spending.

Instead of investing all at once, you spread it out over time. When prices are high, acquire fewer shares or cryptocurrency. When prices are low, you purchase more stock or cryptocurrency. This out the price over time, lowering the risk of purchasing at the wrong time.

7 Productivity Tips Every Crypto Expert Needs to Stay Ahead

Why Smart Investors Use DCA

  • Reduces Risk – You avoid investing everything at the market peak.
  • Eliminates Market Timing Stress – No need to guess when prices are lowest.
  • Disciplined Investing – Helps build long-term wealth consistently.
  • Works for Any Budget – You can start small and grow over time.

DCA is great for long-term investing in stocks, crypto, and ETFs.

SPOT Trading and Leverage Position: What Smart Investors Do in a Bull and Bear Market

Crypto traders typically engage in spot trading, leveraged trading (futures/perpetual), or both. Smart traders understand that with spot trading, they own the asset in real time. Even during market volatility, they have the flexibility to hold onto their assets or sell at a minimal loss.

However, leveraged positions carry the risk of wiping out an entire portfolio in a single trade. Smart investors know how to balance their positions by building strong spot trading portfolios. Acquiring assets shifts one’s approach from mere speculation to conviction and fundamental analysis, where one assesses the real utility of a project before investing.

As my whale mentor once told me:
“Most of the money I have made came from acquiring assets through spot trading, and most of what I have lost was through leveraged positions.”
I didn’t fully grasp the depth of that insight until I gained experience myself—and realised how true it was.

To maximise your investment potential, strategically balance your spot trading portfolio with a well-managed leveraged portfolio. This approach enhances your chances of making smart, strategic investments over time. Plus, holding assets in a spot portfolio allows for more effective position averaging compared to leveraged trading.

How to take advantage of the market under any condition

As I’ve previously stated, the concept of a bull or bear market is largely based on trader sentiment rather than the market itself. The market simply reflects the collective behaviour of traders. Unless you set yourself apart as a strategic trader, you won’t be able to maximise its opportunities.

Seven Profitable Cryptocurrency Trends for Traders with Less than $100 Capital

Tips to set yourself apart;

  • Don’t follow the crowd

Exclusivity of information is powerful—but even without exclusive insights, you can gauge market direction by observing crowd behaviour at its extremes.

When most traders have completely given up on the market, a few smart investors start accumulating assets early, positioning themselves ahead of the next cycle. Conversely, when the market appears the most lucrative and excitement is at its peak, that’s the ideal time to start taking profits and holding some fiat or stablecoins.

Because when the party is over, you don’t want to be the last one left at the crypto table.

  • Dollar Cost Averaging

I like to see Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA) as a strategy to accumulate a bigger share of the pie, not just to buy more assets blindly. After all, what’s the point of accumulating assets if you don’t see a promising future? Buy to strengthen your portfolio and increase profitability.

However, I also view DCA as a strategy for taking profits. You must recognise when to break even and secure your capital, especially if you’re not in for a decade-long investment. Start taking profits when you feel saturated.

One of my mentors puts it perfectly:
“Don’t drink to stupor at the party. Know when you’re tipsy and leave in good shape.”

Likewise, in investing, know when to exit with gains before the market turns against you.

  •  Diversify

Diversifying your portfolio is a powerful way to maximise profits across different market sectors. Altcoins like ETH and Solana tend to experience significant gains in a booming market but also face sharp declines during downturns.

To capitalise on market trends, consider verified altcoins, meme coins, AI projects, or large-scale narratives currently shaping the space. Strategic diversification helps you ride waves of opportunity while effectively managing risk.

Conclusion: Bull and Bear Market

Navigating the market—whether bullish or bearish—requires strategy, patience, and discipline. Smart investors don’t just react to market conditions; they anticipate them. By leveraging DCA, diversifying portfolios, and balancing spot and leveraged positions, you can minimise risks and maximise profits. The key is to stay ahead of the crowd by making informed decisions, not emotional ones.

Remember: The market is cyclical. What looks like the end for some is just the beginning for others. The real winners are those who know when to buy when to hold, and when to take profits.
