5 Quick Remedies to Fix Catfish Diseases Fast

Sick Catfish

If you notice signs of disease in your catfish, don’t panic. I understand how it feels, and seeing your profit go down the drain isn’t something to be joyful about for any entrepreneur. I wrote a blog post on “How to Detect Catfish Diseases Early and Save Your Farm from Losses“, so this is part two, which discusses easy-to-get and fast Catfish disease remedies for some of these Catfish diseases.

Listed below are five fast Catfish disease remedies that have worked for me and other experienced farmers. They will help stabilise your fish and prevent further losses.

1. Salt Treatment (Natural and Effective for Many Diseases)

Salt is one of the most affordable and effective ways to treat bacterial infections, fungal infections, and parasites. I’ve used it many times, especially when my fish start showing signs of stress, red patches, or not showing responsiveness and drooping.

How to Use: This depends on your discretion too

Dissolve 1kg of non-iodised salt in 1,000 litres of water (for large ponds).
If using a concrete pond, spread salt evenly over the water-surface pond. Alternatively, spread it thinly in the tanks or place the sick fish in a salt bath (add salt to a separate tank and dip the fish for 10-15 minutes).

Know that too much salt can harm your fish. Use only when needed.

2. Potassium Permanganate (For Fungal & Bacterial Infections)

This one saved a person’s farm not too far from mine when a fungal infection was rampant. A pond with older Catfish experienced a decline in the number of fish and had to dispose them quickly (by selling them), so they pumped the water out into the river. The contaminated water entered the ponds of other people, which contained juveniles, and they had not developed sufficient immunity to withstand or fight off such a high level of bacteria and infections; as a result, the population began to decline.

That was when I learnt about Potassium permanganate (PP), a powerful disinfectant that helps kill bacteria, fungi, and external parasites.

How to Use:

Mix 2-4 grams of potassium permanganate per 1000L of water.
Spread evenly across the pond.
Let the fish stay in the treated water for 4-6 hours, then do a partial water change.

Caution: Never overdose on PP, as it can burn the fish’s gills. You can even run it for 30 Minutes and flush out the water so new water can come in.

3. Aloe Vera or Bitter Leaf Extract (For Stress & Bacterial Infections)

Plants play an essential role in improving aquatic environments. I watched an informative video and did some research, which showed that many people support the benefits of this natural partnership. I saw a group of stressed fingerlings dealing with minor health issues. Adding specific plants could help them feel better and create a healthier environment for their growth.

Aloe vera and bitter leaf have natural antibacterial properties that boost immunity and heal wounds.

How to Use One of These Catfish disease remedies:

Blend treated fresh bitter leaves and aloe vera gel

Add the extract to your pond once a week as a preventive measure.
For sick fish, soak them in a separate tank with the extract for 20-30 minutes.

4. Lime or Alum (For Water Purification & Disease Prevention)

We understand that poor water quality can be a major cause of disease outbreaks, mainly because that’s their everyday living environment. Water to humans is a natural remedy for human beings, so also are natural Catfish disease remedies.

If you find yourself facing issues like cloudy water, unpleasant odours, or elevated ammonia levels, it’s important to know that you’re not alone.

You might consider using lime or alum, which can help purify your water and bring back its clarity and freshness. Your health and well-being matter, and there are solutions to ensure you have access to safe drinking water.

How to Use:

For lime: Add 1kg of agricultural lime per 1000L of water to reduce acidity and kill harmful bacteria.
For alum: Dissolve 50-100g of alum per 1000L of water to settle dirt and purify the pond.

Don’t overuse (test the pH of your water before applying)!

5. Garlic and Ginger Extract (Boosts Immunity & Fights Internal Parasites)

People include garlic into their fish feed. The strong, potent blend harnesses the natural antibacterial and antiviral properties of garlic along with the anti-inflammatory benefits of ginger. Together, they not only enhance immune function but also effectively help fight internal parasites, bacterial infections, and stress-related illnesses.

How to Use:

  • Blend garlic and ginger into a paste.
  • Mix with pellet feed and allow it to dry before feeding the fish.
  • You can also mix a small amount of garlic juice into the pond water for added protection.

Conclusion

Early detection is key, but taking action fast is what will save your fish and your profits. These five Catfish disease remedies have worked for me and many other farmers:

  1. Salt treatment: Great for parasites and stress
  2. Potassium permanganate: Powerful disinfectant for fungal infections
  3. Aloe vera/bitter leaf: Natural antibacterial and stress reliever
  4. Lime/alum: Cleans and purifies pond water
  5. Garlic/ginger extract: Boosts immunity and fights parasites

If you’re dealing with a disease outbreak, start with the simplest method (like salt or garlic), then move to stronger treatments if needed. Have you ever treated catfish diseases before? What worked for you? Let me know in the comments!
