10 Tips to Overcome the Fear of Entrepreneurship

Overcome the Fear of Entrepreneurship

Despite the appealing lifestyle that comes with being a successful business owner in the long run, most entrepreneurs understand that the journey to success is fraught with uncertainties. The fear of entrepreneurship is what is holding many back from stepping out to build their dream. The fear of failure, financial instability, and the thought of not making the right decisions are the reasons most people do not venture out to uncover the entrepreneur within themselves.

In this effective business idea motivation and inspiration series, we will discuss ten keys to taking this bold step and overcoming your fear of entrepreneurship.

1. Acknowledge Your Fears

Fear is an internal enemy, and to overcome the fear of entrepreneurship, you must identify what is powering it and tackle it from the source. The first step is to recognise that the restrictions are not first outside but coming from the inside. Acknowledging your fears does not make you weak; in fact, it makes you confident enough to face them. Recognising your fears also helps you realise that you have what it takes to overcome them and walk in that accord.

Example:

If your fear is financial insecurity, which is the most common concern for many, you can start by allocating a portion of your income for the next three years into a structured investment package while you work on your business part-time. Doing this will also help you remain financially stable until you are confident in your ability to manage running the business.

2. Change Your Mindset

Is it not true that your strongest thoughts eventually shape your reality? This is indeed true—the thoughts that create the most vivid images in your mind shape your mindset. Your mindset will drive you to actions that lead to your success.

I have often heard people say, “Not all of us will be entrepreneurs,” which astonishes me. Even if you are not a business owner, what stops you from owning shares in a company and becoming a key figure or, at the very least, a shareholder? Mindset is what makes the difference.

Action Plan:

Try to watch an episode of Shark Tank, Lion’s Den, or Dragons’ Den before you sleep to help you see and think like entrepreneurs. Mindsets are largely influenced by those we pay attention to.

3. Start Small and Take Calculated Risks

The significant mistake many make is quitting their job too early when starting their business. They forget that a business, at the outset, requires more financial inflow than outflow. They attempt to pay themselves too soon, which strains the business financially. Most business owners do not begin by raising funds immediately or securing an investor straight away, so avoid the abrupt risk of quitting too soon; instead, stay calculated. This approach will help you remain stable and encourage you to take things step by step. Overfunding is not always a benefit for a business—in fact, overfunding can jeopardise your business more quickly than you might think. There are several things you need to learn in the early days of operating your business, so start small.

4. Develop a Clear Plan to Overcome fear of Entrepreneurship

The more complex the transportation mechanism, the more intricate the flight plan required. Don’t set out clueless and without a vision. Envision every aspect you can. Planning is akin to gestation; there is always a stage of underplanning and a phase of overplanning; to avoid these, All you need to do is discover a clear path in the business. Indeed, a lack of effective planning is a significant source of fear, and this does not spare the fear of entrepreneurship.

Example:

There is no better way to plan than to design your product and let those close to you test and review it so you can optimise and improve on it. Planning is more than theory; it involves showing up and taking the necessary steps to achieve proper execution.

8 things to Consider When Choosing the Right Business Partner

5. Surround Yourself With Supportive People

Join a community of entrepreneurs, seek mentorship, and surround yourself with individuals who share your vision. All these will inspire you to want to become the entrepreneur you have always dreamed of. Don’t stick to people who are not going anywhere you are, those who always talk down on any and every rich person because they have an entitlement mentality.

Example:

You can participate in networking events, engage with online entrepreneur communities, or find a mentor who has successfully built a business in your field.

6. Move in spite of your Fear

The goal is not to eliminate fear; rather, the aim is to act despite it. Fear arises from the lack of control over all the potential circumstances surrounding an event, and that’s not a bad thing. You will learn to weather the storms by stepping into them.

If you’re hoping for the perfect moment, you might not achieve much. Remarkable companies like YouTube and Facebook started without any guarantees of success. It’s wise to be cautious, but don’t let uncertainty hold you back from chasing the opportunities you already see.

Example:

If public speaking makes you anxious but is essential for your business, begin by practising in front of small groups. This way, you can gradually build your confidence before taking on larger audiences.

7. Accept That Failure is Part of the Process

Failure is really just a matter of perspective! In fact, it’s not a true failure until you’ve decided to see it that way. So don’t give up when you hit a bump in the road! Even if you feel like you need to pause because things aren’t going as planned, make sure it’s because you’ve taken the time to reflect and realise it might not be the path for you.

Every great entrepreneur knows that facing failure is just part of the journey to success. During a chat with my crypto mentor, I shared some of my past investments that didn’t go as planned. His response took me by surprise: “That’s your welcome fee!” I hadn’t thought about it that way before. He was really encouraging me to see the value in my failures and to use those lessons to boost my future success!

8. Educate Yourself Continuously

Knowledge significantly reduces fear and uncertainty. The more you immerse yourself in learning about various aspects of business, effective marketing strategies, and emerging industry trends, the more confident and assured you will become in making critical decisions. Engaging with this information not only empowers you with insights but also cultivates a sense of security, allowing you to navigate the complexities of your profession with greater ease and effectiveness. This continuous learning process fosters a stronger foundation for your decision-making, ultimately leading to more successful outcomes in your ventures.

9. Visualize Your Success

Vision plays a significant role in success—how do you envisage yourself? After a conference I was hosting, I spoke to a lady who was tearful as I spoke. She mentioned that she had never visualised herself as successful until the day of the conference.

Do you envision yourself possessing a global brand, or do you see yourself as someone who cannot accomplish anything significant? The perception you hold is as important as the endeavour itself, so start envisioning yourself as that successful business owner. This will help you scale through the hurdles mentally.

Action Point:

Surround yourself with images that reflect what your dream business will look like when you take off.

10. Love your family- especially your spouse and children

Your family members are not your competitors, so don’t treat them as such. Love them and enjoy spending time with them because they will form the emotional solid rock and support system you will need for the long journey.

If you’re often focusing on their faults, they may not be there when you truly need the emotional and psychological support they can offer. So, take a moment to appreciate them and communicate openly with your spouse and children!
